Career
He then played non-league football for Wigan Athletic, where he played four games in the Cheshire League, and made a further five appearances in the Northern Premier League. Cairns was spotted by Dundee United playing in an Army game while doing his National Service. Dundee United gave him a free transfer and he signed for Southport in 1962.
