He started his career in 1991 for the Canadian Press. His first assignments were in Yugoslavia. From 2003-2009 he was based in the Middle East, and was based in New Delhi as the Associated Press"s Chief Photographer for South Asia from 2009-2013.
He is based in China and his work is distributed by Getty Images.
In 2006, Frayer along with a group of colleagues were finalists for the Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography for their reporting from the war in Lebanon and again in 2009 for their work from Afghanistan. His photographs of Palestinian protesters caught in a tear gas assault won a prize from the World Press Photo awards in 2009.
