He entered Hill-Murray High School, captained its team in his junior and senior years, and at Notre Dame, he played in 131 games, 1974-"78, in which he was credited with 54 goals and 75 assists. He was drafted for the Indianapolis Racers, a farm team of the Edmonton, Alberta Oilers, in the World Hockey Association where, during the 1978–"79 season, he was the first linemate that Wayne Gretzky had in professional hockey.
