He started work in the broadcast industry in Red Deer, Alberta in 1988. He then moved north to Edmonton to co-host ITV First News in. Later O'Connell became a weather specialist and is now working on the weekend news show Saturday Morning News, running from 8:00 to 10:00 AM on Saturday mornings.
O'Connell is also seen as a figure of charity. He does much work with the Edmonton Humane Society, Crimestoppers, and the Cancer Foundation.
