He was the son of Ranjit Singh and Maharani Datar Kaur. He was proclaimed Maharaja on the death of his father, 27 June 1839, and installed on the throne at Lahore Fort, 1 September 1839. Kharak Singh became a prisoner and died from slow poisoning on 5 November 1840.
