Khuan PLANELES, USSR Pharmacologist, microbiologist and virologist. Gold Medal of the Spanish Medicine Academy, 1926; Gamaleya Prizes, 1956, 1961; Order of Red Banner of Labor, 1960.


PLANELES, Khuan was born in 1900 in Jerez, Spain.


1921 graduated Medical Faculty, Madrid University.


Professor, since 1944. Doctor of Medicine Science since 1923. Corresponding member, USSR Academy of Medical Science, since 1953.

Head,Department of Infectious Pathology, Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology, USSR Academy of Medical Science. Head,Department of Experimental Chemotherapy, Research Institute of Pharmacology and Experimental Chemotherapy, USSR Academy of Medical Science, since 1949. Since 1926 corresponding member, Spanish Medicine Academy.

Member, Editor Council, journal “Antibiotika” (Antibiotics) and “Zhurnal mikrobiologii i immunobiologii” (Journal of Microbiology and Immunology). Deputy Editor, “Microbiology” section, “Bolshaya meditsinskaya entsiklopediya” (Large Medical Encyclopedia), 2nd edition. Member, Committee Antibiotics, USSR Academy of Medical Science.

Works deal with pharmacology, pharmacotherapy, infectious pathology and experimental therapy. 1921-1935 worked in pharmacological, biochemical and microbiological laboratories and institutes in Spain, Germany, Holland and Switzerland. 1936-1938 senior physician, 5th Rcgt., then Chief, Medicine and Sanitary Service, during Civil War in Spain.

1939-1941 lecturer, Chair of Pharmacology, Saratov Medicine Institute. 1942-1944, Head, Laboratory for Chemotherapeutic Agents., Sechenov 1st Moscow Medicine Institute 1943-1949 Head, Laboratory of Experimental Chemotherapy, Gamaleya Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology, USSR Academy of Medical Science.
