Originally in the tobacco business, in 1893, he proceeded to America to study methods of tobacco blending there and upon return in1894, put out for sale Japan’s first homemade cigarettes known as Asahi.
Later in1897, he amalgamated his concern with an American tobacco company to form Murai Bros. When in 1904, the tobacco business was taken over by the Government as a monopoly he took to mining, forestation and other businesses, including the founding of Murai Bank.
