Saigo Kichijiro worked for the cause of the Meiji Restoration (1868) since a youth. During the Keio Era (1865-1868) he went to Kyoto and took the Imperial Palace guard duty. In the 1868 civil war of the restoration he was killed in action while attacking Nagaoka Castle in Echigo Province (Niigata Prefecture).
