Career
When he came to Satsuma Province (Kagoshima Prefecture) he saw people eating sweet potatoes as a staple food. He asked local farmers to give him some potato seeds to take home, but this they refused, saying it was prohibited by regulations of the province to do so. Kichijuro, however, finally obtained some potato seeds and planted them in Iyo (1711). Raising of sweet potatoes then was widely practiced in the area, even on the islands between Iyo and Bingo Province (Hiroshima Prefecture).
