Kikuo Atarashi was born in Mie Prefecture.
A specialist in the history of the arts and technology of the West, he became instructor at Tokyo Fine Arts School. He went to the U.S. (1934), served with the Oriental department of the Metropolitan Art Museum at New York (1934-36), and returned to Japan (1937) after touring Europe for a year. He is professor at Tokyo Arts University and concurrently serves on the National Cultural Assets Research Institute of Tokyo.
