After studying Chinese classics and Dutch proceeded to Edo for further studies in 1848.
Kikuro Kuroda was an appointed teacher of Dutch in a school in Edo in 1856 after having translated Daniel Defoe’s "Robinson Crusoe" into Japanese. This was the first English classic to be translated about 1851.
Returning home Kikuro Kuroda became a teacher at his clan school in 1865. After the Meiji Restoration in 1868 he devoted all his time to translating books. Late in life studied Sanskrit under Ryuhoku Narushima in Higashi Honganji Temple in Kyoto and rendered outstanding service to the study of Sanskrit in Japan.
