Was trained by Shosen Nakanoshima, third generation head of the Yamada school, from the age of seven.
He became fourth head of the school, succeeding Shosen (1930). As head of the Shunchokai, a koto musicians' organization, he made many new departures from traditional koto music.
He is a professor at the Tokyo Fine Arts University.
