He went to Tokyo (1879) and became a disciple of Soin Ito, the 11th meijin (national champion). After Soin died (1894), he studied under Tohaku Kobayashi in Osaka.
Traveled widely in Japan to meet other distinguished chess players (1884). Gohei Ono became the 12th meijin (1898) and Kinjiro rose to the Eighth Rank (1900). After Gohei died (1922), he became the 13th meijin. Became president of the Japan Shogi Federation upon its organization. He retired (1938) when Yoshio Kimura of the Eighth Rank became meijin under the new system of selecting the national champion through a championship tournament.
