Kinnojo Ume was born in 1858 in Matsue, Japan. He was born in the fifth generation of a family of physicians.
Kinnojo Ume studied at Osaka Medical School under A.F. Bauduin, but the school was closed after Bauduin left Osaka. Ume entered Daigaku Toko in Tokyo and graduated from it in 1879. The government asked three members of Ume's class to study in Germany, and Ume was one of them. He studied ophthalmology in Berlin under Professor C. Schweigger and Professor Brecht at the Navy Hospital.
Kinnojo Ume returned to Japan on January 24, 1883 and established an ophthalmic clinic in the hospital. The following year he with Tetsuzo Suda, Tatsuya Inoue, Masatane Ando and others organized the first meeting of ophthalmologists in this country.
