Kintaro worked as an apprentice at a watch-maker’s. He opened his own shop (1881) in Kyobashi in down town Tokyo and moved to the Ginza (1887). Deploring that the Japanese used mostly imported timepieces, he established the Seikosha Works in Honjo, Tokyo, to manufacture wall-clocks and watches. He succeeded later in extending the market ot its products overseas. Estabiisned the Hattori Hokokai (Public Service) Foundation to promote scientific study.
