Early musical training directed by his brother, composer and organist M. Petrauskas. 1912 graduated St. Petersburg Conservatory.
1906 debut as singer. 1920, together with composer J. A. Tallat-Kelpsb, founded first Lithuania National Theater in Kaunas, now Lithuania State Theater of Opera and Ballet, Vilnius. 1959 member, Lithuania Committee Public Education and Culture.
Deputy, USSR Supreme Soviet of 1946, 1954 and 1958 convocation. Deputy, Lithuania Supreme Soviet of 1959 convocation. Best roles: Kuterma in Rimsky Korsakov’s “Skazanie о nevidimom grade Kitezhe i deve Fevronii” (The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevronia).
