Takayama Kisai was born in Okayama Prefecture, 1850.
He attended Keio University (1869) and after graduating (1872) left for the United States to study dentistry.
Took active part in the Boshin-no-Eki, the civil war which led to the Meiji Restoration (1868).
He set himself up as a dentist in Tokyo and started a private practice. Is responsible for the founding of the Takayama Dental School (1890). He was a delegate to the International Chicago Exhibition (1893). Has written books on dentistry.
