After being trained in Itchu-bushi reciting by Senchu Miyako, he originated his own style (1759). Although his style of reciting was said to have be- come popular in non-theatrical circles, there is no exact record about his career. It appears that his style was a blend of Itchu-bushi and Sonohachi-bushi.
Hanazono Kiyodayu was a Joruri (ballad drama) reciter, originator of the Hanazono-bushi or Hanazono school of reciting.
