Kiyoshi Kanze was born in Edo (now Tokyo). He was the son of Kiyoyuki. He was adopted (1865) by Minoru Umewaka and named Rokuro.

Leaving the Umewaka family (1894) he changed his name to Kiyoyuki, and while assisting Kiyoyasu (head of the family) he became a leading Noh player of the Kanze school.
Considered a genius of the Noh drama he assisted his father in developing the play, which earned him a great reputation.His contribution to Noh was invaluable and he also conducted a research into the family trees of Noh players dating back to several hundreds of years.
