He studied at Leeds University, Princeton University. He graduated from Tokyo University of Commerce and Economics. He held a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Hitotsubashi University.
From 1945 to 1960 he was an assistant professor of international economic at Hitotsubashi University, Japan, a professor from 1960 to 1984, and a professor emeritus since 1984. In 1963 he was a director of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. In 1970 he was an adviser for Asian Development Bank.

In 1947 he married Keiko Kojima.
