1861 began studying at Faculty of Law, 1866 graduate Natural Sciences Department, Saint St. Petersburg University.
1868-1870 worked and studied at laboratories in France and Germany. From 1869 lecturer in botany, Petrine Academy of Arable Farming and Forestry (now Moscow Agric Academy), 1871 defended master’s thesis on spectral analysis of chlorophyll. From 1871 extraordinary professor, Petrine Academy.
1875 defended doctor’s thesis on light absorption in plants. From 1877 professor, Chair of Plant Anatomy and Physiology, Moscow University. 1892 dismissed from Petrine Academy for political activities.
1898 lost professorship at Moscow University “on expiration of contract”. 1902 banned from lecturing but continued' work in Botanical Section. 1911 resigned from Moscow University with other faculty members in protest against policies of Education Minister Kasso.
1917 reinstated as professor, Moscow University but was unable to resume work immediately for health reasons. 1920 deputy, Moscow City Soviet. Honorary dr, Cambridge, Glasgow and Geneva University.
Member, British Royal Social and Edinburgh and Manchester Botanical Social. Considered by Soviet sci to be one of foremost Darwinists. After his death a memorial and museum to him were opened in Moscow.
A distr in Moscow, the Moscow Agric Academy and the Institute of Plant Physiology, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences now bear his name. A Timiryazev Prize for the best works on plant physiology is awarded annually.
