Kleesiek received a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Munster in 1970.
Kleesiek began his career as a scientific assistant at the Aachen University of Technology in 1970. Six years later he took a position of an assistant of medical director at the same university, where he worked until 1983. Then since 1984 Knut has been a director at the Institute for Laboratory and Transfusion Medicine, Heart and Diabetes Center of the Ruhr University Hospital. Since 1986 he has served as a professor of clinical biochemistry at Ruhr University and a lecturer at the University of Bielefeld since 1988.
Kleesiek is a member of German Society for Clinical Chemistry.
Knut Kleesiek is married to Roswitha Engel. They have 2 children.
