When Yokohama port was opened in 1858, he went there and, in 1874, established an import-export business jointly with Kahe Masuda, dealing in sugar, flour, petroleum, rice, etc. In 1884, he started a business firm on his own account with the name of Masudaya, which became one of the biggest trade concerns in the port city. He also established a number of firms including the Nihon Sugar Refinery Co., Yokohama Sugar Refinery Co., Teikoku Flour Co. and Nisshin Spinning Co. He was also director of many other companies and banks.
