While young Kogyii Yoshio was appornted interpreter to the Shogunate and at the same time studied medicine. Soon won great fame as a physician of Dutch school. He was the first to introduce methods for ex¬amining urine. The famous physicians Ryotaku Maeno and Gempaku Sugita were his pupils. Wrote many books on medicine, most noted of which is In-eki-hatsubi, a treatise on how to examine urine.
