Background
Kogyii Yoshio was born in 1724. Originally named Eisho. He belonged to family who were interpreters of Dutch for generations.

Career
While young Kogyii Yoshio was appornted interpreter to the Shogunate and at the same time studied medicine. Soon won great fame as a physician of Dutch school. He was the first to introduce methods for ex¬amining urine. The famous physicians Ryotaku Maeno and Gempaku Sugita were his pupils. Wrote many books on medicine, most noted of which is In-eki-hatsubi, a treatise on how to examine urine.
