While serving as Commander of Japanese troops stationed in China was credited with adroit handling of Tientsin Incident which prevented it from developing into serious trouble. While Commander of Tokyo Guard was appointed Commander of Forces Enforcing Martial Law in Kanto District following February 26, 1936 Incident (military uprising) and was instrumental in suppressing the rebellion.
