Kokichi Ugai propagated political sentiments in accordance with the instructions of Clan Lord Nariaki Tokugawa. Later he carried the Imperial rescript from Emperor Komei for an anti-foreign policy to his clan lord, who was so infuriated that he sentenced both Kökichiand his father to death.
