Kondai Utsugi was born in 1779 in Nagoya, Aichi prefecture, Japan.
Kondai Utsugi studied ancient medicine under Kinkei Nakagami at Kyoto and after hard work established himself as a great physician.
Kondai Utsugi revised the famous Chinese medical book "Shokan-ron" (A Treatise on Typhoid Fever) and published it under the title of Fukan Netsubyo Hokeihen (The Treatment of Typhoid Fever). Among his other medical works are "Kokun-iden" (Old Medicine) in 25 volumes and "Nihon-ifu" (Japanese Medicine) in 70 volumes.
Kondai Utsugi was a master of Sintoism, Confucianism, Buddhism and waka poetry. Many Buddhist priests of the Zen Sect came to study under Utsugi.
His literary works include "Shibunshu" (Collected Proses and Verses) in 15 volumes and "Waka-shu" in 5 volumes. His book "Kaiso" (A Commentary on Chuangtzu) shows that he also was an authority on the doctrines of Laotzu and Chuangtzu.
