Richter was born on October 30, 1963 in Halle, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany; the son of Klaus Helmut and Gerhild Richter.
Richter received a doctorate degree from Medical School of Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg in 1994.
Richter began his career as a surgical resident at Krankenhaus St. Elizabeth and St. Barbara Halle in 1991. Three years later he took a position of a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Also Konrad worked as a surgical resident at Krankenhaus St. Elizabeth and St. Barbara Halle from 1997 to 1998.
Then in 1998 he became a consultant general surgeon at the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena. Since 2007 Richter has been a consultant general surgeon at Southland Hospital and senior lecturer at the University of Otago. Also since 2012 he has served as a clinical associate professor and associate dean of the Dunedin School of Medicine at the University of Otago.
Richter is known for such publications as "Differential effect of radiation on endothelial cell function in rectal cancer and normal rectum", "Physiological concentrations of butyrate favorably modulate genes of oxidative and metabolic stress in primary human colon cells", "Radiation-induced granulocyte transmigration predicts development of delayed structural changes in rat intestine" and others.
He received a grant from the German Academic Exchange Service in 1994-1997.
Richter is a member of Thueringia Surgical Society, Professional Society of German Surgeons and German Society of Surgery.
Konrad Richter is married to Sabine Richter and has 4 children.
