From 1914 in the Tsarist then the Red Army at the front. 1922-1929 researcher, State Historical Museum, Moscow. 1929-1933 researcher, Institute of Communications, and Engineer Technical Communications Academy.
Simultaneously worked for Russian Association of Social Sciences Research Institute. From 1930 instructor, 1935-1950 professor, Historical Faculty, Moscow University. From 1939 simultaneously lecturer, Party High School, Central Committee, All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks).
Worked on soc, economics and political history of Muscovy in 15-17th centuries. Author of textbooks on history of Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics for secondary schools and higher educational establishments, including university textbook Istoriya USSR ot drevneyshikh vremyon do kontsa XVII veka (The History of the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics from the Earliest Times to the Late 17th Century) (1946). Active opponent of M.N. Pokrovskiy's historical school.
