1884 graduate Kronstadt Naval Engineer College. 1888 graduate Naval Academy.
From 1888 worked at shipyards on Baltic and Black Seas, then supervised construction of battleship Tsesarevich and cruiser Bayan in France. Later, as assistant chief engineering, Saint St. Petersburg Portuguese, and chief engineering, Naval Department Shipyard, supervised construction of ships for Far East. Organizer, 1902-1923 dean, Russia’s first shipbuilding faculty opened in 1902 at Saint St. Petersburg Polytech Institute.
On his initiative this faculty began training aeronautical engineers. Also founded an aerodynamics laboratory at Saint St. Petersburg Polytech Institute. Helpd develop motorships.
1898 suggested using oil-fired internal combustion engines in ships. 1903 presented plans for a motorship with this type of engine. Later designed number of naval ships and civilian x'essels with such engines as main drive.
The tower monitor motorships built on his initiative for the River Amur were highly rated by A. North. Krylov. Cofounded Russian Registry Social aimed at freeing Russian shipbuilding from foreign tutelage.
