From 1900 worked at P.S. Kossovich’s agrochemical laboratory, Russian Minister of Agriculture 1913-1929 founder-director, Agrochemistry Department, Nosov Experimental Agric Station, Ukraine. From 1918 professor, Petrograd Forestry Institute.
1928-1930 director, Soil Institute, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. From 1930 head, agrochemical laboratory, Dolgoprudnyy Experimental Station near Moscow. 1928-1930 president, International Social of Pedologists.
From 1915 ed, Zhurnal opytnoy agronomii: developed theory of soil colloids and their role in the formation and fertility of soils. His findings were applied not only in pedology but also in geochemistry and agrochemistry to develop land reclamation techniques. Devised several new methods of soil analysis.
The AllUnion Research Institute for Fertilizers, Agropedology and Agrotech is named after him. Wrote over 100 papers and books and some 2,500 articles
