In 1890’s and 1900’s active in revol movement in Russia. 1898 attended Zurich Congress of League of Russian Social-Democrats Abroad. 1900 edited newspaper “Rabochaya mysl'”.
Attended Paris Congress of 2nd International. Delegation at 2nd Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party Congress in London. Did agitation and propaganda work for Party.
1896 arrested; from 1897 lived abroad and studied sociology. From 1903 concentrated on research and teaching. 1903-1905 read sociology course at Russian Higher School of Social Sciences, Paris.
1907 returned to Russia and worked fora numer of higher educational establishments. From 1917 at Petrograd University. 1924 associate, Institute of Marx and Engels.
Specialized in study of primitive culture, especially religion, and backward peoples of the present.
Every religion forces people to rely on outside authority, thus depriving them to become self-sufficient.
The role of the individual as a member of a collective is more important than the individual.
