Self-taught.
Almost completely lost hearing as a result of a serious childhood illness. 1879 passed teachers’ examinations after correspondence study course. 1880-1892 taught arithmetic.
Geometry and physics at Borovsk Uyezd College, Kaluga Province. From 1892 taught at Kaluga High-School and Kaluga Eparchial College. Did research on three basic problems: sci principles for designing an all-metal dirigible airship (1885-1892).
Design of a streamlined airplane (research published 1894). Interplanetary rockets (from 1896). Developed jet flight theory.
1883 mooted possibility of using jet-propulsion for aviation. 1903 in the article Issledovaniye mirovykh prostranstv reaktivnymi priborami (Exploring Cosmic Space by Jet-Propelled Instruments) advanced theory of rocket flight, calculating the changes in the rocket’s mass during its motion. Substantiated the feasibility of using jet-propulsion devices for interplanetary flight.
Here and in his subsequent articles described theoretical principles of a liquid-fueled jet engine and explained its basic design. 1929 advanced a theory of multi-stage rockets or rocket trains. Solved the problem of rocket motion in a homogeneous gravitational field and calculated the fuel needed to overcome the Earth’s gravity.
His studies on interplanetary flight gave sci proof of the possibility of achieving cosmic speed. Examined the problem of launching a rocket into orbit as an artificial Earth satellite. Raised the idea of setting up extraterrestrial way stations as staging bases for interplanetary travel, et cetera
Also did research on aerodynamics, philosophy, linguistics. Wrote works on soc system of a people living on artificial islands orbiting the Sun between Mars and Earth. In the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics he is venerated as the founder of interplanetary flight theory, rocketry and modem space flight.
Religion is bad because it gets people to believe something untrue.
Marxism–Leninism as the only truth could not, by its very nature, become outdated.
