Koretoshi Sakurayama was born in Bingo Province, Hiroshima, Japan.
When Emperor Godaigo took refuge on Mount Kasagi and raised an army to attack the Hojos (1331), he followed Masashige Kusunoki, one of the Emperor's warrior chieftains. With his headquarters at Ichinomiya in Bingo, he brought most of the province under his control. At the report that the temporary Court on Mount Kasagi had collapsed and Masashige died, many of Koretoshi's followers left him.
Koretoshi killed his wife and children at the Kibitsu Shrine near Okayama, set the shrine on fire and killed himself. He is said to have burned the shrine in order that it might be rebuilt in splendor at the Imperial order.
