Adisciple of Shochiku Shinozaki, a Confucian scholar, as well as a disciple of Kaisen Oda.
In the early Meiji Era, he was the most famous literati- painter in Kyoto, holding his own against Rozan Yasuda, the most popular literary minded painter in Edo.
