Koshiro Matsumoto was born in 1910 in Tokyo, Japan. He was the second son of Koshiro VII.
Succeeded to title of Somegoro Ichikawa VI in 1931, then studying under Kichiemon Nakamura succeeded to the title of Koshiro Matsumoto VIII, after his father’s death. Came into prominence when he played his father’s memorial role of "Benkei Kanjincho" at Tokyo Theater in 1949.
