Became a disciple of Hoitsu Sakai at an early age and his prowess soon became second only to his master.
Later moved to Fuyu kicho, Fukagawa, Edo, and took to himself the name of Tojugaishi (winter tree street man). Patterning his work after Korin Hyakuzu (100 scenes of Korin Ogata) he painted the collection known as Shinsen Korin Hyakuzu.
He was elegant and tasteful by nature and people considered him eccentric.
