Background
Kotaku Yamaguchi was born in 1870, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. When Kotaku was seven years old, his father was killed in the Seinan Affair, by Takamori Saigo's followers.

Career
After passing through difficult times Kotaku became tutor to the Shimazu family. He helped found the Toa Dobunshoin School (1900). Rented 62 500 acres in Brazil and founded an emigrant settlement there (1909). This settlement later developed into the Kaigai Kogyo Kaisha. Joined Tenrikyo and began to write. Works include "Spirit of Founding of Japanese Nation."
