Tsuruyama was a disciple of Shigedayu Toyomi.
About 1755 Tsuruyama moved to Edo and taught Shigedayu-bushi and Kamigata-uta (songs of Kansai District) to the Yoshiwara gay quarters. It is said, he was later prohibited from reciting his poetry there as his tunes and songs were so pathetic that the girls of Yoshiwara were moved to commit suicide.
