伊藤小左衞門
Kozaemon was diligent and hard working and was appointed purveyor to the Lord of Matsudaira Shimo-osa-no-kami and given the privileges of a samurai. Realizing the demand or tea and raw silk abroad he began their production and also encouraged his kinsmen to pay more attention to their cultivation. After the port oi Yokohama was thrown open to foreign trade (1860) Kozaemon exported large quantities of tea and made a huge fortune, thus establishing North Ise's tea industry. Later he began processing raw silk in a small way with only two women to help and it gradually grew to become the Tomioka Spinning Mill. Later Kozaemon invited experts from Nagano Prefecture to help mass produce silk yarn with cocoons from many provinces.
