Kozo Masuda Shogi learnt to play shogi from Kinjiro Kimi, an 8th grade rank holder, at the age of 16 and was given the 7th grade ranking in 1944.
Kozo Masuda was conscripted during the war and demobilized in 1946. The same year he obtained the 8th grade rank by defeating master player Yoshio Kimura in three straight games. He became a 9th grade holder in 1955 and annexed the Meijin (Grand Champion) title by defeating Oyama in 1957.
