His career started in 1936, Krishna Narain Kathapalia worked as a Professor of Civil Engineering, Roorkee University; then he was a Deputy Secretary & Secretary, Government of U.P. 1944-1947. He was retired as a Chief Engineer and Director of Irrigation Research, U.P. 1957. Also, he was a Vice-Chancellor, Roorkee University 1959-1961; Professor General & Pro-Vice Chancellor, Roorkee University since 1961; also a Head of Water Resources Development Training Centre.
