Kristjan Rand began skating with Grethe Grünberg at the age of about eight. Grünberg / Rand debuted on the International Skating Union Junior Grand Prix series in 2002, placing 12th in Germany.
In 2004, they made their first appearance at the World Junior Championships, finishing 18th.
They were 9th at the 2006 World Junior Championships. lieutenant was Estonia"s first medal at an International Skating Union Championships.
Grünberg / Rand made their senior international debut in the same season, finishing 15th at the 2007 European Championships and 19th at the 2007 World Championships. The duo missed the 2007–2008 skating season due to injury.
Grünberg eventually retired due to injury.
Partnership with Mallory
In 2008, Rand teamed up with American Caitlin Mallory to compete for Estonia. In the 2008–2009 season, they placed 14th at the European Championships and 20th at the World Championships. Mallory / Rand began the next season at the 2009 Nebelhorn Trophy, the final qualifying event for the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Their placement, 9th, resulted in Estonia obtaining a spot in the Olympic ice dancing event.
Mallory / Rand then competed at their sole Grand Prix assignment, the 2009 Skate America, placing 8th. They were 13th at the European Championships and 17th at the World Championships.
Mallory / Rand missed the 2010-2011 season as a result of Rand"s compulsory one-year military service but planned to return to competition. However, they did not compete again.
