Prior to taking office Ingólfsdóttir was professor at the University of Iceland’s Faculty of Pharmacy. She was educated at Reykjavik Junior College, the University of Iceland (Bachelor of Science, 1978) and King"s College London (Doctor of Philosophy, 1983).
