Kujo Kanezane was born in 1149. He was the third son of Tadamichi Fujiwara.

Kujo Kanezane was appointed Gondainagon (vice-minister) (1161) and Konoetaisho (commander of Imperial Guards) (1164) and Udaijin (Minister of Right).
After the Heike, family fled to the western districts following the exiled Emperor Antoku, he suggested to ex-Emperor Takakura to make Gotoba the Emperor. Kujo Kanezane was subsequently appointed Sessho (Regent) and became the most powerful person of that era. He was greatly respected as a wise and able administrator.
In 1196, Kujщ Kanezane resigned and then entered a monastery under the name of Ensho (1202).
