Kumaji Aoyma

Background

Kumaji Aoyma was born in 1886.

Career

His famous work "The Ainu", which was entered in the Hakubakai Exhibition (1910). His strong style was reminiscent of Sanzo Wada. Kumaju went to Europe in 1914 just when World War I broke out. Returning to Japan during the war, he exhibited "The Tableland"at the eighth Imperial Academy Art Exhibition (1926) and was awarded an Imperial Academy prize. He died when he had almost completed a fresco in the Engineering Department of Kyushu University.
