Kumaji Kusunose was born in 1865. He was the third son of Tatsugo Sawamura, and the son-in-law of Kosei Kusunose.

In 1891, Kumaji Kusunose graduated from Tokyo University with a degree in technology.
In 1891, Kumaji Kusunose joined the Imperial Navy and was sent to France to study gunpower. Returning home (1894) served the technological branch of the Imperial Navy and concomitantly was professor at his alma mater (1902). Later promoted to vice-admiral and emeritus professor of Tokyo University. Helped develop Japan's manufacture of munitions, especially explosives.
