Kumakichi was born in 1873 in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan.
In 1897 Kumakichi graduated from Tokyo Higher Commercial School.
After graduation from the University Kumakichi became secretary to Prime Minister Taro Katsura. Later entered the business world and became an executive officer of various firms affiliated with the Furukawa zaibatsu. In 1931 was the Minister of Commerce and Industry in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Makoto Saito. Although he was indicted for involvement in the Teikoku Kayon Scandal in 1934. He was acquitted four years later. Was a leader of the Banchokai, a group of influential financiers led by the late Seinosuke Go. After the Pacific War, he was appointed the president of the Japan Trade Association.
