Takechi Kumakichi was born in Kochi Prefecture in 1840.
He distinguished himself in the battle at Tosando under Taisuke Itagaki. In 1871 he was made a captain and a year later was given a job in the Foreign Ministry and Sent to China on an inspection tour. In 1873 owing to differences in opinion with Tomomi Iwakura over the question of invading Korea he left government service and planned to assassinate Tomomi Iwakura for his anti-invasion view.
On the morning of January 14, 1874, he along with eight others attacked Tomomi Iwakura, as the latter was leaving the Imperial Court. He, however, survived the attack and his assailants were sentenced to death.
