Kumar Mangalam Birla is a successful entrepreneur, the chairman of India’s third largest business house, Aditya Birla Group, with presence in various countries like Canada, Australia, Malaysia and China. Kumar Mangalam Birla with a net worth of $7.7 billion emerged as the sixth richest Indian in the list of billionaires.He is also the Chancellor of the Birla Institute of Technology & Science.

Background

Kumar Mangalam Birla was born in a Marwari business family.Kumar Birla spent his early life in Mumbai and Calcutta, and is a Chartered Accountant and MBA from London School of Business. He also has an accountant degree from the University of Bombay. After the demise of his father, Kumar Birla took over the empire of Aditya Birla Group, at the age of 28. At the age of 22, Kumar got married to 18 years old Neerja Kasliwal.

Career

In 1995 he took charge of Aditya Birla Group, when his father died, due to cancer. At the time Kumar took over The Aditya Birla Group, it had already become a giant business house, dealing in viscose, textiles, garments, cement, aluminum and fertilizers. He brought in radical changes, by changing business strategies, professionalizing the entire group and replacing internal systems.

Achievements

  • Kumar reduced his group’s dependence on the cyclic commodities sectors by entering consumer products.he also ventured into sunrise sectors like cellular telephony, asset management, software and BPO. Under Birla's strong leadership the group's turnover has grown up to $33bn and it has expanded operations to more than 40 countries including Australia, Dubai, and reaching out to North America.
